THE WEATHER IN PERTH

A GREAT OUTDOOR LIFESTLYE

If you want to live in the Australian State or Territory that gets the most number of hours of sun then Perth is the state for you. Perth gets more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia. Because Perth has long dry summers and mild wet winters many activities revolve around water making it a perfect place to live if you enjoy water sports, swimming, sailing or just spending time on the beach or by the pool.

Perth's seasons are the opposite to those in the United kingdom. Which, means you get Christmas in the middle of the summer. It does take a little getting used to, spending Christmas Day with a BBQ on the beach.

Perth Beach Xmas 04

The Beach at Mettams Pool in Perth, Christmas Day 2004.

Perth is the sunniest City in Australia with an average of 8 hours a day sunshine. Perth is also the 3rd windiest City in the World with Chicago at number one and Auckland number 2.

The summer months are from December to February. During the summer it is not unusual to see temperatures of 40 ºC on the odd days (If the weather in Perth is greater than 40 ºC for more than 2 days in a row then its what we call a heat wave).

June, July and August are the winter months and the wettest months in Perth. Winter 2004 was the first winter we spent in Perth and apparently one of the wettest they have had in a while. Heavy showers are common during the Perth Winter and when it rains it rains.

You can still see an average daily temperature of 18ºC in Perth during the winter which, is a lot warmer than we were used to back in the UK. It gets a little colder during the night with an average of 9ºC. During our time in Perth we have seen it fall as cold as 2ºC (the coldest recorded was 0ºC in July 1998) so be sure to bring your woolly jumper with you. The weather in Perth cools down a little during the Spring and Autumn. They are probably the time of the year when the temperature is at its most comfortable.

Of course you will get to see the occasional downpour. but when the sun comes out you can enjoy temperatures into the 20's.
