A BRIEF HISTORY
As land at Scarborough was sandy and of little agricultural value, early grants were not made in the area. It was not until 1869 that John Hughes and Jesse Golding were each given lots of 40 acres.

In 1885 a visiting Sydney journalist explored the coastline at Scarborough and promoted the high quality of the beach. Encouraged by the publicity, some real estate agents investigated the possibility of developing the area. In 1885 Perth firm Laurence and Cooke purchased and subdivided land, followed in 1892 by Patrick Callaghan of Melbourne. Lots sold poorly and the Perth suburb of Scarborough was eventually re-subdivided into smaller properties in 1914.

The land was later put to public auction by the Perth Road Board, and in the years following World War II large scale development occurred. At that time street names in the area were altered to mimic the suburb's namesake in Yorkshire. By the 1960's there was little remaining undeveloped land. However, in the mid 1980's extensive redevelopment occurred, particularly along the beach frontage.

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT
The Perth suburb of Scarborough was once dominated by holiday homes and single detached houses built in the post-war era and occupied by workers.

Though many detached residences remain, in recent years a vast transformation has occurred along the coastal strip. Numerous units and flat developments have appeared, some of which are multi- story and echo the style of the Observation City development.

Housing designs thus range from the timber-framed workers' houses to 1960's flats and modern units. In the Perth suburb of Scarborough Lot sizes average 800m2 in, though this decreases north of Scarborough Beach Road.

Improvements to the Scarborough beach front to make Scarborough Perth’s premier beach front district will enhance the suburb’s property values.

Redevelopment is based on a new design concept that will see the suburb’s image and facilities overhauled with families in mind – creating an exciting hub driven by sports and holidaying activities.

The changes will make the beach front more attractive to visitors and encourage more community activities. Scarborough will be hosting the national surf lifesaving competition for the next three years. This will put the spotlight on Scarborough, introducing thousand of new visitors to the area each year, further boosting the demand for rental and owner occupied properties.

Scarborough is one of the most affordable beach-side city suburbs and although it has seen great growth during 205-2006 you can still buy a villa within walking distance of the beach in the $300,000 bracket.

The area is still undervalued in comparison to other beach side suburbs. However, the next five years will see a dramatic shift to premium new apartment development along the coastal strip

The suburb has two primary schools and Scarborough Senior High School caters for secondary students. A library and community recreation centre are located near the eastern boundary of Scarborough.
