The name for the Perth Suburb Merriwa was originally proposed by the Shire of Wanneroo, it was 'Hester' after one of the first land owners in the vicinity.

and is located approximately 36Km North of Perth CBD. Merriwa is situated to the East of Marmion Ave and West of the Wanneroo Road. Neighbouring Sunurbs are Quinns Rock to the West, Clarkson to the South and Butler to the North.

This Perth suburb name was approved in 1980, but was opposed by the Australia Post on account of duplication. Because of this the Shire of Wanneroo proposed the name Merriwa ( an Aboriginal word for 'a good place'). The name was approved in 1980
