Australia isn't a dangerous place to live

We are a Willetton, Perth family living in the UK for a few years.

The most common reaction we get from people here when we tell them we're Aussies is the question "aren't there lots of dangerous animals in Australia?". There is a very common urban myth in the UK that Aussies live surrounded and inundated by snakes and spiders and other dangerous creatures which are lying in wait 7/24 to kill us all. The myth probably comes from the numerous TV programs about Australian wildlife.

Our normal response is to tell people that whilst there are nasties in Australia, the vast majority of Aussies don't encounter them and take precautions against things like redbacks. We also point out that more people get killed by bee stings in Australia each year than by sharks and that all these pale into significance to the numbers killed in car accidents.

So I guess the message here is that an education program putting the dangerous creature situation into perspective needs to happen because our experience suggests that many people are put off visiting or emigrating to Australia by these beliefs.

Snakes Alive
by: Anonymous

When we first moved into our house in Perth my wife was chased up the hallway by a dugite snake fortunately only a small one although still very venomous. She put a bucket over it until I came home and then I slid a piece of cardboard under the bucket and removed it from the house. I later learned that he had probably managed to enter the house by a floor drain. And on inspection I found a flap missing of one of our floor drains outside the house. So we haven,t had anymore although we have seen five since and that would appear to be five more than the average Aussie.

We lived in perth for a year. On our first night we had a lizard and a red back spider run and crawl along the floor of the living room. It is very common to have spiders everywhere in your house, spray helped but you cannot help them being there. We moved North to Mindarie and a snake slivered down our drive into Bushland. So to say that its not bad is wrong. They are there and you live alongside them. Also I found a white tip located in my pyjamas which was left on a table. Could of been a pretty bad nip. I also went fishing alot out there. Some of the fish just off the beach are amazing. There are definetly sharks out there, beleive me. You wouldnt go skinny dipping after dusk. But all in all you accept the danger and try to live with it. I agree that there are bigger risks though, driving is well more hazardous in Perth.
