Life in Perth

Issue #8, August 2005

Good news this month for all you potential migrants as the Australian government announce plans to increase the skilled migration quotas by 20,000 for 2005-2006 in an attempt to resolve Australias Skill shortage.

Further initiatives came to light today as the State Minister Alan Carpenter proposed several initiatives in a letter to the fedaral Immigration Minister Senator Amanda Vanstone. These included:-

  • changing the working holiday maker Visa system allowing workers to stay longer in WA;

  • increasing the age limit for a range of visa classes from 45 to 50; and

  • provisions for non-points tested visa to be included in the State/Territory Nominated Independent (STNI) Visa Scheme.

    An additional extract goes on to say "The STNI could include a provision of a temporary visa where a skill is in demand within a particular state or territory but is not on the SOL. This circumstance can arise very quickly with major resource development projects or with the adoption of new technology. A temporary visa would be granted for the specific project and an application for a permanent visa could be made after meeting occupancy and employment milestones"

    source: WA Business News

    With employment growing at record rates in WA, the state has the lowest average unemployment rate of any of the Australian states (4.7 per cent).

    Mr Carpenter told parliament that "we would have to double our skilled migration program if we relied on the Howard Government's existing migration policy to fill the current vacancies"
